Fought valiantly near Khidrana (now Muktsar Sahib) — sacrificing their lives to protect Guru Gobind Singh Ji

In Sikhism, the term "Chali Mukte" or "40 Mukte" refers to the forty liberated ones. who laid down their lives for the Panth.

During that time, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, had sent a letter known as the Zafarnama (Epistle of Victory) to the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, expressing his disappointment with his policies and actions.

The Chali Mukte fought valiantly near Khidrana (now Muktsar Sahib), sacrificing their lives to protect Guru Gobind Singh. Their bravery is revered in Sikh history as an example of supreme devotion and courage.

MUKTAS OF MUKTSAR: The band of 40 brave Sikhs who laid down their lives fighting near the dhab or lake of Khidrana, also called Isharsar, on 29 December 1705 against a Mughal force in chase of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji who are remembered in Sikh history and daily in the Sikh Ardas or Supplicatory Prayer offered individually or at gatherings at the end of all religious services.

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, who had watched the battle from a nearby mound praised the martyrs' valour and blessed them as the Chali Mukte, the "Forty Immortals" or "Forty Beloved".

After them Khidrana became Muktsar, the "Pool of Liberation".

Historical Context

The Chali Mukte were forty Sikh warriors associated with the Battle of Muktsar in 1705. During this period, Guru Gobind Singh Ji had sent the celebrated Zafarnama (Epistle of Victory) to Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb.

Their Legacy

Their bravery near Khidrana is revered across the Sikh world as the ultimate act of devotion. Guru Gobind Singh blessed them as the liberated ones — the forty souls who attained mukti through selfless sacrifice.
