Gurudwara Sri Chacha Phagumal Sahib stands in Sasaram town in Rohtas district, on the historic Sher Shah Suri Marg (the old Kolkata–Delhi highway). Bhai Phaggu Mal Ji, a devout Sikh and masand, was sent here from Goindwal Sahib by Guru Amar Das Ji as one of the manjis established to spread the teachings of Sikhi, and he made Sasaram his home for the rest of his life, gathering the sangat’s offerings for six successive Gurus.
In his old age, too frail to travel, he longed only to see Guru Sahib once more. When Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji came east on tour, he went to Bhai Phaggu Mal Ji’s home in person, entering through a small door — still preserved at the Gurudwara — and addressed him affectionately as “Chacha Phaggu Mal Ji,” a title of respect and love that has stayed with the Gurudwara’s name ever since.
