Guru Nanak Dev Ji visited Indore during his Second Udasi around 1568 (or 1517) and rested under a tamarind (Imli) tree at this location. He spread teachings about Naam and devotion, drawing a local following during a time when idol worship prevailed

The hospitable spot later became the site of Gurdwara Imli Sahib. Originally built near the tree, which was eventually removed for expansion, its memory is preserved via a platform/site roughly 15 ft below ground level within today’s structure

The structure continued evolving under the Holkar State and Sikh community, culminating around 1940–1942 under administration of Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Indore
