After visiting Goindwal Sahib in 1597, Guru Arjan proceeded to the village of Sarhali, where he sought to obtain land to build himself a home.

A Sikh of the village of Bhaini invited the Guru to visit him, and the Guru knowing his devotion consented. When Guru Arjan and his Sikhs arrived in the village of Bhaini it was approaching night.

The Sikh's wife saw that the Guru was hungry, but at the same time it would take too long to cook vegetables for his dinner. She therefore prepared a delicious dish of Churi (broken bread mixed with sugar and butter), and laid it before him.

Guru Arjan was pleased, he thanked her and said, "The name of this village shall now be known as Chohla." (that is, a delicious dish). Guru Ji would hold regular diwans at the site of Gurdwara Sri Chola Sahib Chohla Sahib.

Tarn Taran Sahib was first founded by Guru Arjan in 1590 AD. During the 1980s and early 1990s Tarn Taran Sahib was suggested as the capital of Khalistan, the proposed Sikh independent nation.
