Khalsa Darbar & Dussehra

On this day, we remember the historic tradition of Khalsa Darbar — the grand assemblies of the Khalsa Panth held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Sri Amritsar, where important decisions concerning the Sikh nation were made collectively through Gurmata, reflecting the collective wisdom and spirit of the Guru’s Khalsa.

Traditionally convened on significant occasions, including around the time of Dussehra, these historic gatherings embodied the principles of unity, equality, and collective leadership. Under the spiritual guidance of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the Sarbat Khalsa came together to deliberate on the challenges facing the Panth and determine its collective path forward.

Historically, the tradition of Sarbat Khalsa became particularly significant during the eighteenth century, when Sikhs faced severe persecution and political uncertainty. These assemblies provided a platform for the Khalsa to rise above individual interests, strengthen collective resolve, and establish a common direction for the Panth. The institution of Gurmata reflected the principle that decisions affecting the Sikh community should emerge from collective deliberation, guided by Sikh values and the greater good of the Panth.

The legacy of Khalsa Darbar continues to inspire Sikhs today. It reminds us that true leadership is rooted in humility, accountability, mutual respect, and a willingness to place collective welfare above personal ambition. In an age of differences and divisions, this historic tradition offers a timeless lesson: when the Panth stands united under the guidance of the Guru, collective wisdom becomes a source of strength, resilience, and direction.

On this occasion, let us honour the enduring legacy of Khalsa Darbar and reaffirm our commitment to Panthic unity, collective wisdom, and Guru-centred decision-making.
