Gurudwara Sri Janam Asthan Bhagat Namdev Ji marks the birthplace of Bhagat Namdev Ji in the village of Narsi Namdev, born in 1270 to mother Gonai Bai and father Dama Seti. As a boy of the Chhimba (cloth-dyer) community, Namdev Ji was once sent by his father to offer prasad before an idol of Lord Vitthal. When the idol showed no sign of accepting it, the young Namdev Ji pleaded and warned that he would give up his life rather than see his devotion go unanswered — and it is said the Divine took form and accepted his offering.

Guided later by his teacher Sant Visoba Khechar towards the formless Divine, Namdev Ji once travelled to the Aundha Nagnath temple, where priests who held to caste distinctions physically barred him from worshipping inside because of his community. Undeterred, he went to sit and worship at the back of the temple instead, pouring his devotion into verses that would later be recorded in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji — and tradition holds that the temple itself turned to face him where he sat, a reversal still visible at the site today.

Bhagat Namdev Ji went on to travel across India with Sant Dyaneshwar, and after his companion’s passing, journeyed to Punjab, settling for eighteen years in meditation at Ghuman village in Gurdaspur district. Many of his hymns are preserved in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, and this Gurudwara at his birthplace honours the life of one of the Panth’s most beloved Bhagats.
