Built in 1573 CE by Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth Sikh Guru and founder of Amritsar (then Ramdaspur), this site was originally his residence
Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, was both married and formally appointed as Guru here; Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Guru, and Baba Atal Rai were born at this location; Guru Hargobind Ji also stayed here for some time
Over time, successive Sikh Gurus expanded and embellished the original hut into the multi-level shrine known today as the “Mahal” (palace)
