Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, was both married and formally appointed as Guru here; Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Guru, and Baba Atal Rai were born at this location; Guru Hargobind Ji also stayed here for some time

Over time, successive Sikh Gurus expanded and embellished the original hut into the multi-level shrine known today as the “Mahal” (palace)
