The Joy of Giving

It feels great to receive a gift. But the greatest satisfaction comes from giving to others, and knowing you've made someone feel happier or made a positive contribution to their life. There is something nourishing to our soul when we give and help others — an intrinsic reward that far outweighs what we give. Altruism and generosity make us healthier and happier, which is why parents usually get more pleasure from their children than children do from their parents, even though the children “receive” far more.

Why do we hesitate to give?

We're misled into believing that by giving, we lose out — true only in the short term. In the long run, giving gives us back so much more than we gave. And yet, when someone wants to do something for us with no apparent gain for them, our society grows suspicious — shameful, isn't it.

How does giving help?

Giving takes our mind off our own worries and challenges. When we're focused on how we can give to others, we're less consumed by our own concerns — it's an opportunity to escape our own world and see the bigger picture. Our worries may not seem so significant when compared to other people's situations.
