Gurudwara Sri Sant Sagar Baoli Sahib stands in the village of Gendikhatha, about 20 km from Haridwar on the road to Najibabad. In 1565, after visiting Nanakmatta, Kashipur, Kotdwar and Najibabad, Guru Nanak Dev Ji arrived here and spent three months and thirteen days in deep meditation, gifting the local people a baoli (stepwell) whose waters they still draw on today.

The garden where Guru Sahib stayed belonged to a local Khatri, who began visiting daily to sit in Guru Sahib’s company. A neighbour who instead spent his days in idle vice found a gold coin buried in the ground where he waited, while the devoted Khatri, returning one day from his visit, found only a thorn lodged in his foot. Guru Sahib explained: an old act of generosity, offered long ago to a holy soul, had been quietly growing into gold for the neighbour, but his present unworthy conduct had begun turning it to ash even as it was found; the thorn, meanwhile, was the last trace of a graver reckoning that the Khatri’s company of saints had spared him from. From Gendikhatha, Guru Sahib continued on to Haridwar.
