Gurudwara Sri Manji Sahib stands on the site of the home of Mata Raj Kaur Ji in Manimajra, Chandigarh. A devoted follower of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, she left her husband Ram Rai Ji’s household in Dehradun after he altered a line of Gurbani to please Emperor Aurangzeb, and settled here to live a life of worship, gathering her own following of devotees.

Tradition holds that when a beam of her house began to collapse, a poor farmer named Garibu Jatt came to her aid where a wealthy neighbour had refused, and Mata Raj Kaur Ji blessed him with a boon that his descendants would become kings. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, travelling through the region after the Battle of Bhangani, visited Mata Raj Kaur Ji here and promised to return whenever she called on him for service — a promise that made this house, and the village of Manimajra, a place of sanctity.
