Gurudwara Sri Gau Ghat Sahib
Patna, Bihar
Alamganj  ·  Patna City  ·  Bihar

Gurudwara Sri Gau Ghat Sahib stands in the Alamganj area of Patna, on the banks of the Ganges near the Mahatma Gandhi Setu, at the site of the old village of Bishambharpur. Guru Nanak Dev Ji halted here and spoke with Bhai Jaitmal Ji, who became his devoted follower. When Bhai Jaitmal asked to be released from worldly life, Guru Sahib blessed him with a longer life instead, promising to return and free him himself in time — and assured him that the Ganga would come daily to his very doorstep, in the form of a cow, to bathe him.

Years later, Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji arrived at the same house with his family. Finding Bhai Jaitmal Ji absorbed in worship behind closed doors, Guru Sahib entered through a small window on horseback, appearing to him in the very form of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Bhai Jaitmal Ji passed away in that moment of darshan, and Guru Sahib had a dharamshala raised on the site of his home — where relics including the window, an old chakki, and wooden pillars once cut short and later found to be full length, are still preserved.
