Gurudwara Sri Sunar Toli Sahib stands near Takht Sri Harmandir Ji Patna Sahib, in the old goldsmiths’ market of Patna. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, after halting at the site of present-day Gau Ghat Sahib, gave Bhai Mardana Ji a precious stone to sell in the city. No trader in the Sunar Toli market would value it correctly until a goldsmith brought Bhai Mardana Ji to the jeweller Salas Rai, who recognised its worth at once and bowed, offering a hundred rupees as an offering.
Guru Sahib returned the money, saying it had not truly been sold, and when Salas Rai came to him in person, Guru Sahib taught him to value his own life as carefully as he had valued the stone. Salas Rai became a devoted Sikh, and Guru Sahib visited his home in the Sunar Toli market — the very house where Guru Gobind Singh Ji would later be born. Mata Sudesh Kumar Arora and her family later gifted the adjoining house to the Gurudwara.
