Gurudwara Sri Bala Sahib stands on the banks of the River Yamuna on Delhi’s outer ring road. Guru Harkrishan Sahib Ji, the eighth Guru, fell ill while tirelessly serving the people of Delhi during a smallpox epidemic, and asked his Sikhs to bring him to a quiet spot away from the city, where a tent was pitched on the riverbank here.

Sensing his time had come, Guru Sahib asked only for five paise and a coconut. When the sangat asked who would succeed him, he spoke just two words — “Baba Bakale” — before leaving for his heavenly abode. His last rites were performed at this site, and his ashes were later taken to Kiratpur Sahib. The last rites of Mata Sunder Kaur Ji and Mata Sahib Kaur Ji were also performed here.
