Gurudwara Sri Bhandara Sahib stands beside Gurudwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib. Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught the threefold path of Kirat Karo, Naam Japo and Vand Chakko — honest labour, remembrance of the Divine, and sharing with all. Testing him, the Sidh yogis handed Guru Sahib a single sesame seed and challenged him to feed everyone from it and still fulfil his own teaching of sharing.
Guru Sahib asked Bhai Mardana Ji to grind the seed into milk and serve it to the gathered Sidhs. Every one of them drank his fill, yet the vessel remained as full as before — until Guru Sahib asked whether anyone present had been left without a share, and the yogis fell silent in shame at their own pettiness. When they then demanded a feast of many dishes, Bhai Mardana Ji, on Guru Sahib’s instruction, simply shook the branches of a banyan tree, and a variety of foods rained down to satisfy their hunger.
