Gurudwara Sri Hargobind Sahib stands within the same compound as Gurudwara Sri Nanakmatta Sahib. Baba Almast Ji had long tended this sacred place of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, but the Sidh yogis of Gorakhmata repeatedly harassed him, eventually driving him out and setting fire to the very pipal tree beneath which Guru Nanak Dev Ji had once meditated.
Baba Almast Ji sent word to Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji at Daroli Bhai. Guru Sahib came in person, sprinkled water upon the scorched pipal tree, and brought it back to life — its trunk still bears the marks of that old fire, with half its leaves a deeper, reddish hue and the rest a fresh green. When the Sidhs sent for help from Raja Baj Bahadur of Pilibhit, the Raja arrived only to recognise Guru Sahib as the very one who had freed him and fifty-one other kings from the fort of Gwalior years before, and fell at his feet. Guru Sahib later travelled on to Pilibhit at the Raja’s side.
