Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji came to this place in 1665 from the village of Handiaya, by way of Dhaula. Guru Sahib stopped outside the village and tied his horse to a Karir and a Jand tree. The Karir tree is preserved at the Gurdwara still.

When Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji asked the name of the village, the people answered that it was Sohiwal, or Mohiwal. Guru Sahib replied: Na sohi na mohi, eh hosi thehi thehi — neither Sohi nor Mohi; this will become mound upon mound.

The village was later abandoned after being looted and destroyed by the forces of Ahmad Shah Abdali, and the words spoken here are remembered in the light of what followed.
