Handiaya, six kilometres south-west of Barnala city, holds two historic Gurdwaras commemorating the visit of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. Gurdwara Sri Pakka Gurusar Sahib is the second of them.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji rested at Handiaya under a grove of trees near a pond, held diwan and performed kirtan for the sangat. It was here that Guru Sahib bade the villagers set aside the prejudice that kept them from the water, bathing in the pond himself, after which the sick of the surrounding villages were healed.
The two shrines at Handiaya are known as the kacha and the pakka Gurusar — the unbaked and the baked — from the construction of the older and later buildings raised over these sites.
